Java SMF Backup / Is there a maximum backup size Java SMF Backup can handle?
« Last post by Celestia on April 15, 2009, 12:51:49 pm »
Hi,

I've been successfully using Java SMF Backup for a couple of years now to backup three forums (all of the forums are currently running on SMF 1.1.8).

The scheduled backups have been running successfully with no hitches, until about a month ago (I only realised there was a problem this morning though when I decided to clear up old backups from my hard drive).

The reason I'm wondering if there's a maximum backup size Java SMF Backup will handle though is that two of the forums have still been backing up fine - they're both small forums and the compressed backup files are less than 2MB for both of them (one's less than 1MB). With my main forum though, which is much larger and busier, the compressed backup file's over 13MB. When the backup runs (I have it set to backup when Java SMF Backup starts and at 8pm each evening) the backup appears to run okay, but the resulting file appears to be empty, with a filesize of 0kb. The last successful backup of the forum that doesn't have a file with a filesize of 0kb seems to be from the beginning of March, which IIRC was around the time I upgraded all of the forums from 1.1.7 to 1.1.8, although I don't think that's relevant, as the backups for the other two forums seem to be fine.

I've just installed the new 1.3.0 beta of Java SMF Backup, as I wondered if the older version I was using was the problem, but exactly the same thing's happening - seems to run okay, but the resulting filesize is 0kb... ???

Any idea what might be going wrong?

(I've attached a screenshot of the Java SMF Backup screen)

Java SMF Backup / Re: JavaSMFBackup as a "daemon" on a server with no "desktop"?

Sure!

Maybe you can install tightvnc + some basic window manager - and run the application there. But I don't know if the VNC session will remain active after you disconnect.
The fonts will probably look ugly also.

If you try, please post back with the results.

Thanks,

Hi,

You are right, the app does not work without a GUI... As it never crossed my mind to keep it running as a daemon, the GUI part cannot be disabled.

I will add this to the list of enhancements, thank you for letting me know!

Hi,

Nice app you have. Works great on windows machine. But on the linux server itself I got some error messages.

Quote
~/JavaSMFBackup# ./runJavaSMFBackup.sh

This is an debian etch server with no "Desktop/GUI". Or im I just missing something?

Java SMF Backup / Re: Java SMF Backup and SMF 2.0
« Last post by viulian on April 17, 2008, 06:41:31 am »
Thank you :)

As is, version 1.0.X of Java SMF Backup does not work with SMF 2.0 Beta 3. This is because the action URLs have changed + some other improvements the SMF team did to the backend administration pages.

However, I've just finished some test runs of a new version I'm working on, which will also handle SMF 2.0 Beta 3. It's not yet ready to be released, so if regular backups are critical for you, please do not do the forum upgrade.

I'll post a note on the main page, as well as posting here: http://www.simplemachines.org/community/index.php?topic=115957.0

I love Java SMF Backup.  Will it work with version 2.0?  I'm afraid to upgrade.

I'm checking into the IP thing.

"And another thing - I cannot see the image, irfan complains about unrecognized header."
My copy of IrfanView shows it OK, you may need to add the .png file type to your IrfanView.

I guess you should try the Charles solution I posted... See what exactly Java SMF Backup is receiving from your server.

I would like to test it myself, but it seems I'm not allowed to access your test forum (probably my IP is restricted and I get those "Forbidden" errors).
I'll pm you my IP now.

Thanks and sorry for the hassle :(
